Sawyer Variability Demo - adapting to real-world variability

Published on Sep 29, 2015

The plant floor can be a chaotic place, with constantly changing conditions that make it challenging for conventional automation. Our robots are specifically designed to work in these “real world” environments. They can pick up items that aren’t precisely aligned, then re-orient and place them correctly. Their unique combination of compliance and advanced sensing technology means they adapt to your environment, rather than having to adapt your environment to them.

Rethink Robotics in Shanghai at the 2015 China International Industry Fair

Published on Nov 4, 2015

This week at the China International Industry Fair (CIIF) we announced a distribution agreement with leading automation provider Shanghai Electrical Automation Design Research Institute Co., Ltd (SEARI), a division of Shanghai Electric, to deliver smart, collaborative robots Baxter and Sawyer to the Chinese manufacturing community. Sawyer at Work: case packing

Published on Apr 5, 2016

Our smart, collaborative robots are well suited for a wide range of packaging applications. From the repetitive demands of case packing and kitting lines, to the high variability requirements of 3PL providers, Baxter and Sawyer are the complete package for a wide range of applications and industries. Today, our robots are on the job packing raw materials, finished parts and multi-pack cases for many different types of products, containers and configurations.

Sawyer at Work - Machine Tending: CNC

Published on Apr 15, 2016

Machine tending can be among the most unpleasant jobs in any plant, but our robots are right at home in this role. Their ability to integrate with other automation make them a great solution for coordinating with the varied cycle times involved with a multi-machine operation. Baxter is on the job tending press brakes, loading/unloading machines, supporting finishing operations, and performing other tasks requiring machine interaction today. And Sawyer is specifically designed for high performance, high precision machine tending tasks such as circuit board testing.

Sawyer at work: line loading and unloading

Published on May 2, 2016

Almost every plant in the world operates some form of line loading and unloading. Our smart, collaborative robots provide a great solution for the monotonous, yet critically important jobs of moving parts to and from tables, conveyors, fixtures and more. Their ability to maintain counts, re-orient parts and place them into position makes them a natural fit.

Sawyer at work: machine tending demo at Hannover Messe 2016

Published on May 5, 2016

Collaborative robot Sawyer picks material from a tray and maneuvers into a tight space showcasing the versatility of the 7 degree of freedom arm. It loads the part into the machine chuck. Even if the part is somewhat off-center or misaligned during the insertion into the chuck- as the three jaws clamp, the compliance in the arm allows the robot to absorb the forces and adapt to the environment.

The robot, through I/O, signals the machine to clamp the part. The arm then moves to a position to push physical buttons and work like a human would to start the machine indicated by the yellow light on the light stack. The robot moves back into position to remove the parts, the robot signals the machine to release the part. The task also leverages the RPS with landmarks in which many times during throughout the show, the machine could easily be re-registered to the new position and effortlessly put it back to work.
