On February 19, 2015, CodeX – The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics hosted a discussion with Jerry Kaplan, Visiting Lecturer in Computer Science and Codex Fellow, on Artificial Intelligence and the Law.
Kaplan discussed the practical challenges artificially intelligent systems pose to our legal, economic, and civil systems, and what we should do to prepare for their emergence.

On Tuesday, May 24, the University of Washington Tech Policy Lab and the UW School of Law co-hosted the first of four White House public workshops on artificial intelligence. Deputy CTO Ed Felton and other members of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy spoke on panels. Speakers included Lab Co-Director Ryan Calo, Oren Etzioni, Kellye Testy, R. David Edelman, Pedro Domingos, Deirdre Mulligan, Kate Crawford, Jack Balkin, and Camille Fischer.

Susskind addressed the ways in which advances in artificial intelligence, virtual reality, machine learning and collaboration tools in the Internet age are fundamentally altering the legal landscape and all professions. New commercial models of sharing expertise are replacing the traditional professional bargain. Serious ethical issues are being raised about who should control and manage this professional shift. Decisions being made today are forming the platform for a radically new professional environment.
