This is a short visual effects film my friend and I did. Only two people did the post production and editing for this short. We have a total of 28 visual effects shots. I did modeled, textured and rigged the robot head. Kyle and I split the tracking, I did the majority of the tracking, reason being he is the composting artist, which isn't my strong suit. So enjoy!

"Quarantine"
from Vera Bennett
April 22, 2013

My film is about robots, and humans, but mostly robots.

I love to explore the relationship between humans and robots. It is a subject that really interests me, and I try to approach it from different angles. I started wondering what it would be like for a human, a generally emotional being, to be raised by a robot, a being based in logic. I also wondered, if given the proper level of artificial intelligence, how emotional could a rational being like a robot become. Could this protagonist grow to care for the human he has raised, or will he just see the human as a means to an end?

Animation has been my passion and shaped much of my personal character. Writing and story design for animated features and television shows is how I want to spend the rest of my life. I love crafting new worlds and new characters to fill those worlds; I guess you could say storytelling is my passion, and animation is the medium in which I prefer to tell my stories.

Quarantine, like most of my films, started out as vague character designs and a vague concept of the world they lived in. Only over the course of designing and building the characters and sets, did the story begin to take shape. I took some risks and started without a script, only an idea of what I wanted floating around in my mind.

Quarantine was shot in puppet stop motion style, with all sets and characters hand made by myself. I wanted a more ‘choppy’ feel to the animation style that would add to the film’s ‘grungy’, post-apocalyptic world.

Description:
I was clearing-up the drives of unused files (for deletion)
and saw some old shots I did with erwin a long time ago just lying around and eating some disk space, and I thought why not try to load 'em up in after effects and see what I can come up with. This is the result. I really didn't think about it that much just a surge of randomicity.

They say that we all lose 21 grams at the exact moment of death. They say that it's the weight of the human soul.
Well, it was Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts who first attempted to weigh the human soul. In 1907, he placed 6 dying patients on a homemade scale, which also acted as a bed for the patients. More recently in Dan Brown's novel, "the Lost Symbol", there is a segment that explains how "The Institute of Noetic Science" uses noetics to weigh the human soul. After tests on terminally ill patients, it came across that immediately after death, a person's weight dropped.
So, what would happen if they found a way to contain this invincible mass.. this soul.. Obviously the only reason to do this would be to put it in some kind of awesome robot.. yeah!

"Dot Matrix Revolution"
by superbrothers
September 11, 2008

DOT MATRIX REVOLUTION v BOW BEFORE THE CLOUD
Following an early morning status check of their vintage electronic equipment, two computer engineers "throw down" in an awkward dance-off that innacurately echoes the development of information technolgy and the internet from 1951 up to the present day. The film features a catchy jingle by pop impresario Jim Guthrie.
*: The point at which a given species cedes planetary control to robots or machines.
Production notes: This film was produced by Superbrothers in 2006 before the establishment of Superbrothers Inc., but it was not until after incorporation that the film was eventually released. Critical reception of the film was positive, although most felt that the aim of the film was less lofty than its acclaimed predecessor THE CHILDREN OF THE CLONE, and that its creators had gone soft, already drifting from their revolutionary roots.
Interestingly, the film caught the attention of a number of internet web logs, leading to criticism by the notoriously tech savvy internet web log users, who responded harshly to home viewings of the film with comments like these: "Lame. Stupid. Fail. The depiction of Computer Systems of each period are so innacurate as to be totally misleading." or worse, "Lame on SOOOO many levels. Not even deinterlaced properly, which is amazing considering it's trying to look 8-bit. I was wondering how this crap got voted up, then saw, of course, Mr.BabyMan's fan army voted it up".

"Post-Human", sci-fi proof-of-concept short, David Simpson, Canada, 2015

Post-Human is a scifi proof-of-concept short based on the award-winning and bestselling series of novels by me, David Simpson. Amazingly, filmed over just three hours by a crew of three, the short depicts the opening of Post-Human, drawing back the curtain on the Post-Human world and letting viewers see the world and characters they’ve only been able to imagine previously. You’ll get a taste of a world where everyone is immortal, have onboard mental “mind’s eye” computers, nanotechnology can make your every dream a reality, and thanks to the magnetic targeted fusion implants every post-human has, everyone can fly (and yep, there’s flying in this short!) But there’s a dark side to this brave new world, including the fact that every post-human is monitored from the inside out, and the one artificial superintelligence running the show might be about to make its first big mistake. ;)

The entire crew was only three people, including me, and I was behind the camera at all times. The talent is Madison Smith (Legends of Tomorrow, Supernatural) as James Keats, and Bridget Graham (Pixels, Manhattan Undying, Hemlock Grove) as his wife, Katherine. As a result of the expense of the spectacular location, the entire short had to be filmed in three hours, so we had to be lean and fast. What a rush! (Pun intended).

The concept was to try to replicate what a full-length feature would look and feel like by adapting the opening of Post-Human, right up to what would be the opening credits. Of course, as I was producing the movie myself, we only had a micro-budget, but after researching the indie films here on Vimeo over the last year, I became convinced that we could create a reasonable facsimile of what a big-budget production would look like and hopefully introduce this world to many more people who aren’t necessarily aficionados of scifi exclusively on the Kindle. While the series has been downloaded over a million times since 2012, I’ve always intended for it to be adapted for film, and I’m excited to have, in some small measure, finally succeeded.

Many thanks to Ivan Torrent, an unbelievably talented composer who allows his work to be used for free for non-commercial films. We set the pacing of the opening to his incredible work, and we hope we can expose him to thousands of new listeners through our movie.

Also, a huge thank you to Michael Eng, who is literally the only visual effects artist to have worked on this film. He did everything CG that you see (and some that you don’t see) and is the reason the effects have such a unified, compelling look.

Thank you to Sanha Cho, my former student and now a film student at NYU for helping us with the cameras during our rushed set ups.

And my biggest thank you has to go to my wife, Jenny, who worked just as hard as I did on this project and deserves a ton of credit. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have a wife that supports my dreams like this. Jenny, you are the BEST! I love you!

And for you, the Vimeo community, a huge thank you! If I hadn’t seen such incredible films on here, done with micro budgets and affordable but powerful cameras, this would have been impossible. A special mention is deserved by Ian Watt, who made beautiful films with a Black Magic Pocket Cinema, a Glidecam HD4000, a Metabones Speedbooster, some nice filters and a Rokinon 16mm f/2.0 lens. We ended up opting for the Sigma 18-35 mm, but we basically had the same set up. Add a couple of tripods and a slider, and you’ve got what you need to make a great short film! We also used a Zoom audio recorder and a Rhode mic, and we edited the film in Final Cut and the sound in Adobe Audition. The colour correction was done in DaVinci Resolve. And yes, we did it all! Everything in post was done by Jenny, myself, and Michael. We even bought a second-hand Makerbot and 3D printed the original design for James' helmet! It was a heck of a lot of work, but it was a labor of love and we’re very proud of it. I hope you’ll enjoy it too, and if you feel like being extra awesome, please share what we did or leave a positive comment to help us get a feature film off the ground. :)

And a huge thank you to the growing Post-Human tribe of readers, who’ve made attempting something like this possible by supporting the series online so enthusiastically and making my dream of becoming a professional novelist a reality!

"The River is Moving", Gio Toninelo, 2015, USA
November 14, 2015

"The River is Moving" is a short story about redemption. The movie is set in contemporary Denver, CO, where humans and robots co-exist. A male robot lives a solitary life seeking his place in society.
The music of John Common has always had a cinematic quality. Fittingly, his new EP’s four-minute title track has inspired a short film by Brazilian director Gio Toninelo, a tale of underworld salvation with shades of Spike Jonze's "I'm Here".

Having proceeded without his father's consent, the two must come to terms with their situations.

November 7, 2016

M.A.M.O.N. (Monitor Against Mexicans Over Nationwide) is a satirical fantasy sci-fi shortfilm that explores with black humor and lots of VFX the outrageous consequences of Donald Trump´s plan of banning immigration and building an enormous wall on the Mexico - US border.

The dark comedy showcases a spectacular fight involving bizarre weapons, and numerous dark jokes about the cliches and stereotypical antics of the Mexican and Latino community, as the quinceañera, the quetzalcoatl, the lucha libre, the mariachi, the chapulín colorado, etc.

M.A.M.O.N. is part of the Wecanfxit project, powered by Uruguayan production house Aparato.
Our mission is to change the world using our geeky weapons: cinematography, visual effects and CGI.
Our motto: Making the world a better place, one pixel at a time.

The story takes place after the Robot/Human War. Many of the androids lay broken and discarded, but one awakens. Like a phoenix, she rises from the debris and searches for her friends. Together, they leave their life behind and retreat to the outside world, perhaps to save more of their kind or to retreat to a sanctuary. We may never know.

CGI 3D animated short: "Signal/Void" - by Substance

Published on Jul 11, 2017

Check out this amazing CGI Animated Short created by the talented team at Substance! Signal/Void is a darker perspective on the networks we belong to and take part in every day: some voluntary, some unseen. The mechanisms of these networks are designed to keep us plugged in by delivering stories, information, and images - hopes and dreams - that directly feed our own desires and version of reality.

But the cold truth is that the ultimate goal is often the collection, quantification, analysis, and storage of our very selves, and so these networks are carefully tuned and maintained to best keep us blindly acquiescent. The system is addictive and hard to escape; it sucks up time, closes our eyes to the world around us, and blinds us to a true human connection.

Published on Jul 18, 2013

Based on the DARK HORSE comic. NUMBER 13, a young cybernetic amnesiac, wanders a postapocalyptic wasteland searching for a father he can't remember. He possesses powers coveted by irrational, feuding factions of the future, and he quickly becomes entangled in their deadly struggle for world dominance!

In a far-off future where hope is a forgotten word, a teenage boy awakens in a wasteland patrolled by mechanized monsters. With no memories of his past life, no belongings and no home, the only thing he truly possesses are mysterious, cybernetic powers. It is these abilities, coveted by rival factions intent on exploiting him, that quickly entangle him in a deadly struggle for the future of humanity. Known only by the number tattooed on his head, he is NUMBER 13.

This is a short film I've made for my portfolio as a 3D Environment Artist.
Everything is made from scratch - models, textures, concept, lighting, design, animation, music, story - by me, as that was the challenge - to do everything myself, basically.

Programs used: CryEngine, 3DS Max, Maya, PhotoShop, ZBrush, and After Effects, as well as FL Studio for the music.

In the year 2025, a young man's superintelligent AI system tells him that he must go on a date or face certain suicide from loneliness.

When Daniel's superintelligent AI, 'Counselor' (Siri on steroids), finds out that he's been dreaming about one of the girls in his virtua-class, Counselor persuades him to ask her out on a date the only way she knows how: by convincing him that if he doesn't go he will, according to statistical probabilities, kill himself. It's a tall order for a guy who hasn't left his apartment in 42 days and is more than happy to stay at home with his 2025 technology.

"Vigilant" - science fiction movie
January 17, 2019

A brilliant scientist who invents powerful drones to protect the Earth from Intelligent Alien forces. It is a science fiction film inspired from marvel comics and movies. After struggling with random ideas, I came up with this concept of creating sci-fi short. VIGILANT took me around 6 months for pre-production.

I worked on each department on my own. Such as Concept art, 3D Modeling, Lighting, Texturing, Rendering(V-Ray) and compositing. After finalizing 3D Models, I asked my friend to act in the film. Then I composed 3D Models and live action plates together, which took me another month to complete. Mostly, I worked on Autodesk Maya with V-ray plug in.

Software’s used for this project: Maya, Substance Painter, Nuke, After Effects, Photoshop, Premier Pro, Davinci Resolve.

CGI Animated Short Film "AALY" by Abdelrahman M. Daoud

Sep 4, 2020

"Aaly" tells the story of a mysterious robot doing what he loves best. Out of the vast, barren expanse of the desert, he finds something special—a sole plant, jutting out of the Earth. But what Aaly does with that plant creates even more questions for the viewer. A morality tale about what humans do with life and nature, Aaly encourages the audience to ponder what it means to live today: What is the impact of the machines we build? What do we treasure, and what do we destroy?

I wanted to create a story that was instantly recognizable but totally surprising. Seeking to present a world similar to my home in Sudan, but more extreme.

A Robot is a Robot
January 14, 2019

Following the tragic end of its military career, a disabled robot war-veteran finds its home among humans in the tender care of an old lady, and hire in her hair salon for cats. But can this ruthless killer leave its destructive past behind, once faced with the cat-based challenges that life throws at it?

A Robot is a Robot is a sombre and quietly comedic short movie, that will make inordinate amounts of air shoot from your nose, while making you ask questions like “is genuine change possible?” and “how much hair simulation is too much?”

A Robot is a Robot is directed by Emil Friis Ernst and Nilas Røpke Driessen and was produced with the support of the Open Workshop.

Dave is the last human employee at "UGAGO" - a hip, modern stock footage-company. Dave hates his job, the group activities, and the annoyingly exuberant team spirit of his robot colleagues.
