Filmmaker Courtney Marsh details how a "helper robot" attempts to communicate with the family dog in this empathetic sci-fi drama.

One family has a "ZARI" -- a small housekeeping robot that barely registers with the humans who own it.

The bot spends most of its days alone doing its daily chores, with only the family dog for company.

But at some point, it tries to develop a "relationship" to its canine companion -- with quietly heartbreaking results.

Impeccably crafted, carefully constructed and shot on actual film, the film imbues its central robot character with respect and even tenderness. Through subtle but precise directing, the camera hints at ZARI's growing awareness, asking intriguing questions about loneliness, technology and connection.

"ZARI" requires patience and close attention, but rewards viewers with an engaging take on a popular science fiction trope. After watching it, you might never look at a Roomba in quite the same way again.
