Thymio II is an improvement of the original Thymio robot. Both have been developed in a collaboration between the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (http://www.epfl.ch/index.en.html) (EPFL) and the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ecal). The Thymio II robot has been developed in the framework of the NCCR Robotics (http://www.nccr-robotics.ch) program.

The Thymio II robot unleashes your creativity!
Published on Sep 11, 2012
Thymio II, the educational robot unveiled at the EPFL robotic festival last year, can now be programmed in a graphical environment, completing the set of creative tools associated with it. It can thus be programmed by younger kids, allowing them to animate their creations, such as dragons, parrots or robotic helicopters. Developed by a team of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), the Ecole d'Art de Lausanne, the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule Zurich (ETHZ) and the Mobsya association in the framework of the Swiss National Center for Competence in Research "Robotics", Thymio II was distributed to more than 1000 children in Switzerland.

Ant navigation using the Thymio robot

Example of navigation using a simple pen drawing on the ground. This is inspired by ant navigation based on pheromones. Ants do this path drawing collectively, here a single robot does it.

Created at EPFL in 2011, Thymio II is now present in thousands of copies in Swiss and French schools, as well as in private homes. It offers a decidedly intuitive and fun approach to learning about programming.
