Tethys - A new breed of undersea robot

Over the past decade, the undersea robots known as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have become increasingly important in oceanographic research. MBARI engineers recently demonstrated a new super-efficient AUV that can travel rapidly for hundreds of kilometers, "hover" in the water for weeks at a time, and carry a wide variety of instruments.

Research robot Tethys in Lake Michigan

On Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, the USGS retrieved the high-tech underwater robot Tethys from Lake Michigan off Holland. The AUV is gathering data on algae and plankton in the Great Lakes.

Exploring the underwater world with Tethys Robotics

Tethys Robotics is a team of eight ETH students who constructed an underwater vehicle called Scubo 2.0. The robot explores the underwater world and carries out various tasks under the surface of the water. The students are competing in the 2019 international MATE ROV competition as the first Swiss team ever.
