Robots Reach through a Cluttered World

Published on Apr 29, 2013

Robots are now able to intelligently maneuver within clutter, gently making contact with objects while accomplishing a task. This new control method, developed by Associate Professor Charlie Kemp, has wide applications ranging from robots for search-and-rescue operations to assistive robotics for people with disabilities. In a preliminary trial, Henry Evans, an individual with quadriplegia, used a robot to perform tasks. Evans was able to pull a blanket over himself and grab a cloth to wipe his face, all while he was in bed at his home.

Learning to reach into the unknown: Selecting initial conditions when reaching in clutter

Published on Dec 10, 2014

The video shows a reaching-in-clutter experiment with a PR2 robot in a foliage-aperture-clutter. The contents of the video contain two
reaching trials that Learning Initial Conditions (LIC) selects a passable aperture and a good initial configuration to reach a goal.
