Rising STAR, a miniautre highly reconfigurable robot

Rising STAR (RSTAR) is a new highly reconfigurable robot fitted with both sprawling and 4bar extension mechanisms.

RSTAR is capable of crawling over and under different obstacles using different techniques. It can extend it height and width by 3 fold and move its center of mass in the foreaft direction enabling it to climb over obstacles higher than its own wheels. It can also perform a turtle gait to crawl over challenging terrain without rotating its wheels.

Developed at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev By David Zarrouk and Liran Yehezkel and published in IEEE RAL and ICRA 2018.

Parent robot (BIG STAR) collaborating with a child robot (RSTAR)

A new parent STAR robot is presented. The parent robot has a tail on which the child robot can climb. By collaborating together, the two robots can reach locations that neither can reach on its own. the parent robot can also supply the child robot with energy by recharging its batteries. The parent STAR can dispatch and recuperate the child STAR automatically (when aligned). The robots are fitted with sensors and controllers and have automatic capabilities but make no decisions on their own.

RSTAR robot climbing in circular and rectangular pipes

This video describes the climbing of RSTAR in a pipe.
Climbing in a pipe is very tricky if you do not use a robot specifically designed for climbing. The transitioning between one configuration to another requires low friction while climbing requires high friction.
The transitions require to simultaneously control different mechanisms. Therefore, automatic climbing was more efficient than radio control by a human operator.
