Pulling a Man with the Inspection Robot KAIRO 3

Published on Jul 3, 2013

Our modular inspection robot KAIRO 3 is able to pull more than its own weight which is about 45 kg.
To demonstrate the power of KAIRO 3 we pulled a man sitting inside a rescue stretcher.
Filmed at the Civil Protection Field Exercise Taranis 2013.

Inspection Robot KAIRO II - Climbing up a Step

Published on Jul 1, 2013

The modular inspection robot KAIRO-II is a highly flexible sensor carrier, consisting of drive segments with wheels, which are connected through powerful joint segments. Each drive segment has two DOF and each joint segment has three DOF with harmonic drive gear boxes. Its snake-like kinematic structure combined with the great torques of the joint segments allows KAIRO II to lift individual segments and climb over obstacles. Filmed at FZI Research Center for Information Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany 2011.

Autonomous stair climbing with the snake-like inspection robot KAIRO 3

Published on Aug 5, 2015

The reconfigurable inspection robot KAIRO 3 with its snake-like kinematics can autonomously climb up unknown obstacles like stairs. An integrated rotating laser scanner (KaRoLa) is used to capture precise 3D point clouds. Multiple point clouds are registered and a 2.5D map is generated. Based on this map paths over obstacles are planned and motions with joint angles are generated. The resulting paths depend on the current configuration (amount of modules) of the reconfigurable inspection robot KAIRO 3.
