What do you get when you combine an air balloon, airplane, helicopter, and even a hovercraft? This is Airlander, the hybrid airship that's being build in Britain's historical Royal Air Force Cardington hangars, where the R101 airship was built nearly a century ago.

The Airlander 10 hybrid aircraft, nicknamed the 'flying bum' is the largest aircraft in the world and is expected to become a showcase of UK innovation.
It can stay airborne for up to five days at a time to carry out a wide range of tasks including communication and surveillance, as well as tourist passenger flights.
The aircraft left its UK hangar for the first time this week and will undergo further tests on the ground before it can be cleared to fly.

Hybrid Air Vehicles Airlander 10, the world's largest aircraft, sustained damage on landing during the second test flight on 24 August 2016. According to Hybrid Air Vehicles, “all crew are safe and well and there are no injuries”. Airlander 10 measures 92 m (302 ft) in length, 26 m (85 ft) in height and is 43.5 m (143 ft) wide. The aircraft is filled with helium, has a total weight of 20000 kg and a payload capacity up to 10000 kg.

Hybrid Air Vehicles successfully tested Airlander 10 at the Cardington Airfield, Bedfordshire, on 10 May 2017. Airlander took off at 17:28 and flew for a total of 180 minutes, before landing at 20:15. According to HAV, the additional “landing feet” of the Auxiliary Landing System (ALS) performed as expected on landing. This was the third test flight, part of the Flight Test Programme of the Airlander 10 started on 17 August 2016. Airlander 10 is the world's largest aircraft measuring 92 m (302 ft) in length, 26 m (85 ft) in height and is 43.5 m (143 ft) wide. The aircraft is filled with helium, has a total weight of 20000 kg and a payload capacity up to 10000 kg.

Hybrid Air Vehicles Airlander 10 performed a successful test flight on 17 November 2017, at Cardington Airfield, Bedfordshire. On 18 November, Airlander become loose from its mooring and collapsed into a hedgerow. Unconfirmed reports of one person suffering minor injuries.
