Robotic fruit picking project

Published on Sep 23, 2013

Progress at the 18 month mark.

The objective of this project is to develop an ultra low cost and weight modular and adaptable fruit picking robot suited to agricultural environments. Ideally cost should be so low as to make it pointless for others to compete as well as making large scale manufacture cheap and feasible.

As a function of the modular design, a vehicle trailer with 20 or more of a refined version would be used to pick various fruit and vegetable crops. Thus far progress is looking good with preliminary software, mechanical and electronic architectures demonstrating feasibility. Pushing ahead the next stage includes refinement and preparation for full speed picking field trials.

Automated Garden

Check out the instructable for more details: instructables.com/id/Automated-Garden (https://www.instructables.com/id/Automated-Garden)

The last garden I planted next to my desk at work did not go so well. It suffered from a lack of sunlight as well as my hectic work schedule (i.e. lack of watering). It never managed to get quite enough sun or water. After a long mourning period had passed, I decided that the best way to improve the situation was to put the past behind me and start over with an automated garden.

Earthrise - Japan's Future Farms

Published on May 26, 2015

By 2050, the world will need to feed an additional 2.5 billion people living in cities. Yet as the demand for food rises, the amount of land available for agriculture in developed countries is expected to decline.

In Japan, at the Fujitsu factory of Aizu-Wakamatsu which still manufactures semiconductor chips for computers, a different project is underway which may offer a solution to this problem.

The company has converted an unused part of the factory into a farm to grow food - and more specifically, to grow lettuce. Fujitsu has focused on growing a low-potassium variety, which is sold to people with kidney problems who cannot process the mineral properly.

Join Rachel Mealey in Japan's Fukushima Prefecture to visit the sun-free and soil-free urban farms of the future.

Unmanned aircraft applications to agriculture: today and tomorrow

Published on Mar 24, 2016

Crop producers are increasingly providing digital data to manage crop production on a more precise field scale. Crop and livestock monitoring by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), and the imagery collected with these systems, will provide additional data sets to increase precision management practices and yields for farmers and ranchers and, simultaneously, provide more effective safeguards for the natural environment.

John Nowatzki is an agricultural machine systems specialist in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at North Dakota State University. His research uses Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in crop and livestock applications to improve crop health and increase crop yields.

John is currently conducting applied research and University Extension programming in four areas: UAS applications to crop and livestock management, active optical sensor applications to field crop health, the impacts of soil compaction from wheel tracks on field crop yields, and the impacts of tree windbreaks on field crop yields.

Development and autonomous navigation of a field robot

Published on May 23, 2016

This video presents the development and autonomous navigation in a row crop of a low-cost four wheel differential-drive field robot. The platform features a passive articulated suspension system, that allows the chassis to adapt to the soil's morphology and its four drive wheels to remain in contact with the substrate during obstacle climbing.

The vehicle's motion control system includes individual PID controllers for closed-loop regulation of the four wheels' velocity. The platform is equipped with various internal state sensors and perceives its external environment by using only one web camera, installed on a pan/tilt mechanism. The images acquired by the webcam are processed in real-time by an Odroid Single-Board Computer, implementing a fuzzy logic motion controller that allows autonomous traversing of a row crop.

The robot has been developed at the Control Systems and Robotics Laboratory of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, in Heraklion, Greece.

Robot waters plants

Published on Jun 10, 2016

The task gives the robot a green thumb, quite literally. The Multipurpose Mobile Manipulator can water houseplants in an indoor environment using a specialized hose adapter that pours water from an upside-down water bottle located on the back of the robot. It searches for houseplants using an ultrasonic rangefinder on the other hand. With enough development, this task can evolve into a full fledged autonomous gardening and farming machine, where the robot monitors, fertilizes, and waters a row of plants over time.

Agricultural high-tech is one of the measures that are seen as a solution to these problems. In the midst of this, "harvesting robots" driven by AI and robotic technology are gathering attention. The idea is to leave harvesting work, which accounts for 20% of all agricultural work, to robots in order to increase efficiency. Advanced farms are already appearing that have put robots to work and are developing technology and know-how....

Automated driving methods for smart farming

Published on May 13, 2019

Smart farming has introduced a high level of automation and saved millions of tons of pesticides. The missing link for optimizing farming is heading in the direction of autonomous operations in order to optimize resources, increase the level of efficiency and reduce costs. The aim is to transfer technologies from the automotive domain and adapt them to the agriculture sector as much as possible, adding additional features, such as the introduction of new type of sensors, platforms and/or communication networks. The developed V&V tools and demonstrators will improve the testing workflow for autonomous farming systems.

AI Does Food | Joel Cuello | TEDxUofA

Published on Sep 28, 2018

Our planet sorely needs the help of artificial intelligence to achieve the increase in food production that our growing population demands in the face of scarce resources.

AI will help realize Cuello’s Law, which is the projected industry goal that crop productivity per unit resource use in a tech-dense vertical farm must double every 4-5 years.

The Global Marshall Plan for AI-based Food Production is introduced here to provide capacity building so that no nation is left behind in AI-based food production, making sure that AI will be used to produce food sustainably, not only for some, but for all of us on the planet.
Joel Cuello is a Professor of Biosystems Engineering and Director of the Global Initiative for Strategic Agriculture in Dry Lands (GISAD) at The University of Arizona. A globally recognized expert in the engineering of sustainable biological and agricultural systems, Joel has designed various engineered systems, including those applied in bioregenerative space life support, industrial mass production of algae cultures, and vertical farming.

Robot uses machine learning to harvest lettuce

Jul 8, 2019

Crops such as potatoes and wheat have been harvested mechanically at scale for decades, but many other crops have to date resisted automation. Iceberg lettuce is one such crop. Although it is the most common type of lettuce grown in the UK, iceberg is easily damaged and grows relatively flat to the ground, presenting a challenge for robotic harvesters.

The ‘Vegebot’, developed by a team at the University of Cambridge, was initially trained to recognise and harvest iceberg lettuce in a lab setting. It has now been successfully tested in a variety of field conditions in cooperation with G’s Growers, a local fruit and vegetable co-operative.

Although the prototype is nowhere near as fast or efficient as a human worker, it demonstrates how the use of robotics in agriculture might be expanded, even for crops like iceberg lettuce which are particularly challenging to harvest mechanically.

7 farming robots to change agriculture

Dec 1, 2020

7 farming robots to change agriculture. Robots in farming have never been so important as they are know. Agriculture robotics help humans in farming and the demand for AI robots is huge since many tasks are still performed semi manually or technology does not payoff at the current stage. However, farming robots are already doing the dirty work in more fields than people may realize.

Agricultural robots automate slow, repetitive and dull tasks for farmers, allowing them to focus more on improving overall production yields. Some of the most common robots in agriculture are used for: Harvesting and picking. Weed control.

Grain Bin Robot | Grain Weevil

Premiered Apr 20, 2021

"Build a Robot so I never have to climb into a grain bin again."

Grain bins are extremely dangerous places for farmers of all ages - The Grain Weevil was built to save lives. The auger-style robot levels grain in the bin to help break up crusts and bridges, avoid entrapments, and improve grain quality.

Grain Weevil: 2021 $10,000 “Eat it!” Lemelson-MIT Student Prize Undergraduate Team Winner

Apr 26, 2021

Large grain bins are used to store surplus grain supplies and allow farmers to hold their yield for higher prices. Managing grain condition and extraction require farmers to physically enter the grain bin, which is difficult and dangerous, often trapping and even killing farmers. A lack of proper management and extraction systems cause a 30% loss in cereal grain value worldwide. The Grain Weevil is a grain extraction and bin management robot that scurries across the top of the grain within a bin, smoothing out clumps so that the grain can be properly aerated and easily extracted from the bin. This device helps farmers safely and efficiently manage the extraction of grain from the bin, as well as maintain grain quality while in storage.

Towards robotic harvesting: mapping, localization, planning and control for a legged tree harvester

Nov 8, 2021

Full title: Towards Autonomous Robotic Precision Harvesting: Mapping, Localization, Planning and Control for a Legged Tree Harvester

We present an integrated system for performing precision harvesting missions using a legged harvester (HEAP) in a confined, GPS denied forest environment. The mission starts with a human mapping the area of interest using a custom-made sensor module. Subsequently, a human expert selects the trees for harvesting. The sensor module is then mounted on the machine and used for localization within the given map. Upon reaching the approach pose, the machine grabs a tree with a general-purpose gripper. This process repeats for all the trees selected by the operator. Our system has been tested on a testing field with tree trunks and in a natural forest.
