Fireproof Aerial RObot System (FAROS)

Published on Jan 3, 2016

This video demonstrates the FAROS (Fireproof Aerial RObot System) for fire disaster.
The drone can climb the wall to pass through narrow and smoky area. It has a 2D-LiDAR sensor for self-localization. Its pose estimation result is visualized on V-REP simulator.
The drone also has fire-proof function as shown on the video. It can endure fire over 1,000 C.
This research was supported by KIDS (KAIST Institute for Disaster Studies).

In emergencies, should you trust a robot?

Published on Feb 29, 2016

In emergencies, people may trust robots too much for their own safety, a new study suggests. In a mock building fire, test subjects followed instructions from an “Emergency Guide Robot” even after the machine had proven itself unreliable – and after some participants were told that robot had broken down.

Lockheed Martin autonomous aircraft conduct firefighting, rescue mission

Published on Nov 11, 2016

On Nov. 8, four autonomous vehicles collaborated for a joint firefighting and lifesaving demonstration: the K-MAX helicopter, the Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA), the Desert Hawk 3.1 fixed wing unmanned aircraft, and the Indago quadrotor. First, Indago located hot spots and directed the K-MAX to drop water on the fire. Then, the Desert Hawk 3.1 surveyed the site and worked with K-MAX and SARA to complete a search and rescue mission.

Using swarms of drones to map and help fight wildfires

Nov 15, 2019

To monitor and stop the spread of wildfires, University of Michigan engineers developed UAVs that could find, map and report fires. One day UAVs like this could work with disaster response units, firefighters and other emergency teams to provide real-time accurate information to reduce damage and save lives.

For their research, the University of Michigan graduate students won first place at a competition for using a swarm of UAVs to successfully map and report simulated wildfires.
