"Sugar Time! with Miss Bouffant" Robot Sculpture at Bay Area Maker Faire

Published on May 23, 2015

Mark Galt, a well known and respected Bay Area creator of kinetic art and automata, displayed several of his works at the Bay Area Maker Faire held in San Mateo last weekend. One of his more recent creations, “Sugar Time with Miss Bouffant” set a new high watermark for unsettling spookiness, to the point that it seemed to have been a leftover spirit from the Twilight Zone TV series.

We first met Mark when he displayed one of his early kinetic sculptures, a walking figure, at RoboGames back when it was still being held at Fort Mason in San Francisco, probably in 2006 or 2007.

Marks works are always extremely well crafted and executed, which is understandable since his work career has been in producing fine instrumentation and mechanisms for physics laboratories and other demanding environments. At the same time, Marks artistic pieces bring out his creativity, whimsy, and sense of humor in a way that is sure to please and delight.
