Introducing Project Wing
Published on Aug 28, 2014
Project Wing is a Google[x] project that is developing a delivery system that uses self-flying vehicles. As part of our research, we built a vehicle and traveled to Queensland, Australia for some test flights. There, we successfully delivered a first aid kit, candy bars, dog treats, and water to a couple of Australian farmers. We’re only just beginning to develop the technology to make a safe delivery system possible, but we think that there’s tremendous potential to transport goods more quickly, safely and efficiently.

Google's Project Wing delivery drone prototype
Published on May 24, 2015
The type of consumer qudacopters designed for aerial photography and FPV racing aren't ideal for automated delivery--you can't just tie a string to a Phantom. At Maker Faire, we learn about Google's Project Wing prototype, which has a lightweight VTOL design that allows it to take off vertically and still fly long distances. It's even been tested in the field!

Project Wing tests real-world drone deliveries in Australia
Published on Oct 16, 2017
In fall 2017, Project Wing started testing drone deliveries to residential yards in rural Australia. Our testers, including young families, busy professionals and retirees, had many suggestions for how our technology could alleviate the inconvenience of having to drive 40-minutes round trip in the car for almost anything, whether it’s a carton of milk, veggies for dinner, or a cup of coffee. Hear from testers about their experience.

Wing’s contactless #DroneDelivery service has been helpful to our customers in Canberra, ACT, and Logan, QLD, during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing access to food and other household essentials at a time when they’re staying at home and limiting their contact with others. Using OpenSky for commercial drone operations

Level up your drone game & download the new OpenSky app for free: wing.com/opensky
Understanding airspace rules can be complex, especially when flying a drone for commercial purposes. OpenSky makes it easier to get the approvals needed to fly in controlled airspace & is also an approved LAANC provider by the Federal Aviation Administration.

How precise are delivery drones? | Wing drone delivery
Oct 17, 2022
How do you get a package from a drone to the ground? That’s a challenge we spent a lot of time trying to tackle. There are different ways you can accomplish this. You can drop it. But eggs and coffee tend to react badly to that. You can attach a parachute to the package. But your neighbor might end up with your roast chicken. You can land the drone and unload it. But dogs and cats can be very curious.
