This is an updated video showing Otto's wall climbing capabilities.

Otto is a proof of concept, high capacity wall climbing platform developed in San Luis Obispo, California. We designed, built and tested Otto in less than a year, and was intended only as a proof of concept,to showcase the functionality of an industrial robotic wall-climber.

Otto was built with a custom, non-magnetic adhesion system. Using vacuum power as its adhesion force, Otto is capable of carrying 70 pounds up a vertical surface, and 160 pounds across an inverted surface. Powered through a 50-foot tether, the drive motors enable Otto to drive at speeds up to 5.9 ft/s, faster than an average human walking pace. Otto’s custom drive system and chassis construction give it all-wheel drive and the capability 360? in-place turns.

When Otto was unveiled , it captivated the surrounding community – exceeding all expectations. Because of the limited time and budget allocated for development, Otto had a few performance limitations - It can only operate on smooth surfaces. But developing this technology is only a sample of what is to come, as Otto’s success is what has driven us to take this technology beyond its original intention and turn it into something bigger. We are taking what we have learned from Otto and are now building a more efficient, more refined, and practical product.
