Robotic Skins With Integrated Actuation, Sensing, and Variable Stiffness: A variable stiffness robotic skin "integrates stiffness-changing capabilities, sensing, and actuation into a single, thin modular robot design." Like prior robotic skins, this skin can actuate and sense, but with the added ability to change its stiffness to lock its shape and bear weight. These variable stiffness robotic skins can be applied "as adaptable linkages in larger robots, smart reconfigurable garments, and reconfigurable active structures, thereby allowing the robotic system to adapt to time-varying task requirements."
