Sawyer at work: machine tending demo at Hannover Messe 2016

    Published on May 5, 2016

Collaborative robot Sawyer picks material from a tray and maneuvers into a tight space showcasing the versatility of the 7 degree of freedom arm. It loads the part into the machine chuck. Even if the part is somewhat off-center or misaligned during the insertion into the chuck- as the three jaws clamp, the compliance in the arm allows the robot to absorb the forces and adapt to the environment.

The robot, through I/O, signals the machine to clamp the part. The arm then moves to a position to push physical buttons and work like a human would to start the machine indicated by the yellow light on the light stack. The robot moves back into position to remove the parts, the robot signals the machine to release the part. The task also leverages the RPS with landmarks in which many times during throughout the show, the machine could easily be re-registered to the new position and effortlessly put it back to work.
