Icefin deployed through the ice on a jetty off McMurdo Sound. This is not the Ross Ice Shelf, but shallow water off McMurdo, an area where scientific research equipment is often placed in the water.

As part of a NASA-funded program, a needle-like robotic vehicle is plunging the icy depths at our planet's poles. Jupiter's moon Europa could be next.
