Marty the Robot - Weekend Hack #1 - eyebrows and Lego!

    Published on Jun 29, 2016

This is the first in a series of weekend hacks we're going to do - little customisations or add-ons that you can do with a Marty! This week, we give Marty eyebrows that can move individually, and we build Lego on top of Marty!

Marty the Robot gets bump switches on his feet!

    Published on Jun 29, 2016

In the second of our "weekend hacks" series, we show another little add on you can do with Marty. Marty's electronics have spare ports for attaching all kinds of sensors (or extra motors), and as a simple demo we've attached a couple of bump switches to his feet.

Now he can tell when he bumps into something (like another Marty...)

Marty the Robot is a fully programmable, wifi-enabled, customisable walking robot. Perfect for kids, makers, and educators.

He's got a unique way of walking and moving around - but he can walk, turn, kick a ball, and bust out funky dance moves. These are some of those funky moves.

    Marty the Robot goes Disco!

    Published on Jul 15, 2016

In this episode of our weekend hacks series, we add a whole bunch of LEDs to Marty! We added a neopixel 12 LED ring behind each eye, and a neopixel strip under the chin. Then dancing happened.

Marty the Robot gets voice control!

    Published on Aug 4, 2016

In this "weekend hack" video, we added voice control to a Marty. We used a Raspberry Pi 3 and a USB microphone, and then installed a voice recognition library called PocketSphinx onto the Raspberry Pi.

It runs offline in real time, and is fairly accurate - although Marty ends up dancing a lot of his own volition

Setting up the voice control was a bit fiddly, as most of the guides we found for the Raspberry Pi were out of date, so we'll make a blog post with more detailed instructions and some sample code soon!

In the longer term, we'll also make it so that you can voice control your Marty without even needing the Raspberry Pi!
