Mr Wang Chuan-fu is the founder, chairman, executive director and president of the China-based BYD Co Ltd. The company manufactures batteries for mobile devices, grid-tied energy storage and electric vehicles. It also produces electric vehicles, LEDs and other IT components. Mr Wang founded the company in 1995 and grew it to 170,000 employees; it is now worth $11.2bn. Through its manufacture of electric cars for taxi fleets, electric buses, over 100MWh of grid-tied energy storage systems, and 850MW of PV panels annually, it has avoided over 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions. BYD is the third largest lithium ion battery producer and its grid-scale energy storage systems account for 23% of globally commissioned installed capacity (not including pumped hydro or compressed air systems). Mr Wang and BYD have received thousands of patents and numerous awards around the world.
