University of Strathclyde engineers Elif Oguz and Martin Kubicek took first steps on the simulated Martian surface during a mission of the Crew 135 to the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, the USA. Their task was to make sure that all life-critical systems of the base function properly - for example, a failure of an air-conditioning unit on Mars could have fatal consequences for the entire crew.
