A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 541 rocket launched the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-S (GOES-S) from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, on 1 March 2018, at 22:02 UTC (17:02 EST). GOES-S is the second of four satellites to be launched for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in a new and advanced series of spacecraft. Once in geostationary orbit, it will be known as GOES-17. GOES-S marks the sixth Atlas V to launch in the 541 configuration.

AFSPC-11 is a multi-manifested mission. The forward spacecraft is referred to as CBAS (Continuous Broadcast Augmenting SATCOM) and the aft spacecraft is EAGLE (ESPA Augmented GEO Laboratory Experiment).

The mission marks the first interplanetary launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base. The two-year InSight mission seeks to understand the evolutionary formation of rocky planets, including Earth, by investigating the interior structure and processes of Mars.
