Makr Shakr is a new robotic bartending system that allows users to create, in real-time, personalized cocktail recipes through a smart phone application and transform them into crowd-sourced drink combinations. The cocktail creation is assembled by three robotic arms, whose movements - visualized on a large display positioned behind the bar - mimic the actions of a bartender, from the shaking of a martini to the thin slicing of a lemon garnish. The system explores the new dynamics of social creation and consumption - ‘design, make and enjoy’ - and in just the time needed to prepare a new cocktail.

Instead of trying to replace a bartender with a robot, Makr Shakr is a social experiment that looks at how people might embrace the new possibilities offered by digital manufacturing. In Makr Shakr, social connections are woven throughout the co-creation and mixing of ingredients, which are then fed back to the user through the app. With this new technology, consumers can learn from each other, sharing connections, recipes and photos on social networks. Furthermore, Makr Shakr can monitor alcohol consumption and blood alcohol levels - something beyond what a traditional bartender can do - hence promoting responsible drinking.

Makr Shakr will be unveiled at Google I/O in San Francisco on 15 May 2013.

Created as a collaboration between MIT Sensible Lab, Pentagram and SuperUber, Makr Shakr is an innovative social experiment: a robotic bar, able to prepare drinks based on crowd input. The robotic arms serve guests that can customize their drinks or order pre-existing cocktails via a mobile app. The robot also measures and tracks the popularity of certain drinks, which is displayed on a large data visualization screen above the bar, along with wait time and other data. Makr Shakr also has the capability to cut people off when they’ve gotten a little too far — the system can monitor its patrons’ booze consumption and approximate blood alcohol content.

SuperUber developed the data visualization and creative technology – interfacing between design, code and hardware. The futuristic project premiered at the Milano Design Week 2013, in Italy, and participates in various events such as Google I/O 2013 in San Francisco, USA.

    Published on Oct 23, 2014

Makr Shakr was originally launched in 2013 when Google requested MIT Senseable City Lab and professor Carlo Ratti to develop an installation which studied how new technologies affect people's lives.

The first prototype was revealed to the public during the Milan Furniture Fair 2013, when Makr Shakr was installed in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II at the heart of Milan.

Makr Shakr was later on presented at Google I/O 2013 After Hours conference in San Francisco, where the audience showed great excitement towards social creation and consumption via the robots.
