The Portuguese National Guard and TEKEVER joined other Portuguese public authorities and created - together - a massive system, that combines several types of unmanned systems to perform aerial surveillance over the Peneda Geres National Park.
The use of these innovative means – that are expected to be fully operational by 2015 - is done in total coordination with all the other means on the ground.
They are the eyes of the authorities in the sky, detecting potential threats, and delivering information in real time, flying around the natural park.
Besides having low operational costs, unmanned systems enable immediate reaction in case of fire. However, this innovative capability is also extremely useful for other missions, like supporting search and rescue of missing park visitors or protecting the numerous endangered animal and plant species.
During the first year, we plan to fly more than 8000 hours, which will give us the ability to react quickly and have an efficient response.
