PNR (Passenger Name Record) is a 10-digit number allotted to each indian railways ticket. This is assigned to all train tickets irrespective of whether they are booked online through IRCTC or few permitted OTAs or they are booked offline through PRS (Passenger Reservation System). PNR number when combined with journey date can uniquely identify an indian railways trip. A passenger can check his latest train PNR status on Trainman. The PNR status freezes on chart preparation and do not change anymore. On charting, passengers having confirmed or RAC status are allotted berths/seats and those having e-tickets which are wait-listed are cancelled automatically. For few lucky passengers, the travel class is upgraded if accommodation is available in a higher class.
