DNA as a programmable language, with Adrian Woolfson and Kaihang Wang
Jan 25, 2026

A new technology just announced this weekend in a paper in Nature could have a radical impact on how gene assembly is carried out.

In this interview conducted during JPM Week in San Francisco, pharmaphorum Editor in Chief Jonah Comstock spoke with Adrian Woolfson, cofounder and CEO of GenYro and Kaihang Wang, chief scientific advisor and cofounder, who also invented the new technology called Sidewinder.

Wang explains how inserting “DNA page numbers” into oligonucleotides will allow gene editing to move into a new world where DNA can be written essentially from scratch.

Woolfson and Wang discuss the enormous potential of this new technology – particularly in combination with AI – as well as its bioethical ramifications.
