Robots swim like fish

Jan 3, 2014

Fish robotics is a major theme of research at professor George Lauder's laboratory at Harvard University. The lab focuses on fish mechanics and evolution with the goal of using information gained about fish locomotion to develop a new generation of underwater autonomous vehicles that are quiet and maneuver like fish.

Robotic fins are placed into recirculating flow tanks or "fish treadmills" so that Lauder can vary the flow rate and observe performance, something not possible with live fish.
