AI, Chatbots, and Robots: Hod Lipson

Dec 11, 2023

With ChatGPT celebrating the anniversary of its launch a year ago, we thought this would be a good time to sit down with roboticist Hod Lipson and ask him what he thinks about all the changes with the rapid evolution of AI, how they’ve enabled the creation of ChatGPT, and what all this may mean for our future. A leading researcher in the fields of AI and robotics, Lipson directs the Creative Machines Lab at Columbia Engineering, where he and his students design and build robots that do what you’d least expect robots to do: self-replicate, self-reflect, ask questions, and be creative. The group is even developing machines that can design and make other machines - automatically. Inspired by biology, his research explores new biological concepts for engineering and generates new engineering insights into biology. Lipson is the James and Sally Scapa Professor of Innovation in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and co-director of the Makerspace at Columbia.
