PR2 robot clears dinner table - Stanford University

Uploaded on Dec 13, 2011

This project was done by Abhishek Sharma, Bharath Bhat and Rohan Kamath at the AI Lab, Stanford University in Autumn 2011.

In this project we use a Microsoft Kinect sensor mounted on top of the PR2 robot (Willow Garage Inc.) to obtain RGB and depth images of table top objects. Further, the algorithm
attempts to recognize general dining table objects and locate their positions. Finally, we make the robot pick up the objects and place them in separate boxes based on their type.

We would like to express our gratitude to Ellen Klingbeil and Samir Menon from the Stanford AI Lab for their help and guidance during the project.

Robot Learns to Flip Pancakes

Uploaded on Jul 26, 2010

Pancake day special!

The video shows a Barrett WAM robot learning to flip pancakes by reinforcement learning. The motion is encoded in a mixture of basis force fields through an extension of Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP) that represents the synergies across the different variables through stiffness matrices. An Inverse Dynamics controller with variable stiffness is used for reproduction.

For pancake day special, the skill is first demonstrated via kinesthetic teaching, and then refined by Policy learning by Weighting Exploration with the Returns (PoWER) algorithm. After 50 trials, the robot learns that the first part of the task requires a stiff behavior to throw the pancake in the air, while the second part requires the hand to be compliant in order to catch the pancake without having it bounced off the pan.

Hot Pot Restaurant in Southwest China Employs Robot Waitresses

Published on Nov 5, 2015

A hot pot restaurant in southwest China's Chongqing, a city renowned for its spicy cuisine particularly the hot pot, has employed two robots as waitresses to attract customers.

The two robots work efficiently despite relatively rigid movement. The shorter one speaks mandarin while the taller one speaks Chongqing dialect.

The robots are liked by many customers.

"We think the robot waitresses are fashionable. And they serve well. We and our kids are happy to see them," said a customer.

"I like the taller girl who speaks Chongqing dialect. Her character is like a real Chongqing girl who is straightforward, upright and pleasant," said another customer.

Meet Turi
November 9, 2015

Hailing from Kate, Nat and Michael’s collective imagination, an arrogantly self-absorbed, self proclaimed comedian named Turi came with one plan; to initiate global domination and become an evil robot overlord.
Observing humans in their natural habitat, the local watering hole, Turi determined that the bar environment was the easiest point of social infiltration in order to rule the world.
Thus Turi raised an army in the form of robotic industrial arms upgraded into the ultimate cocktail makers. Boldly leading from the front, Turi, disguised as a charming, cute little bar manager aims to become your local evil robot overlord, lulling you into its service, mindlessly heeding to its every beck and call.
That said, Turi's robots do make one heck of an espresso martini.

One of the craziest things I saw in Beijing last week was this robotic chef at X.E. Flavour, where they are using it to cook for large banquets. Set it and forget it!

Robotic bar tending in Shanghai at CIIF 2015

Published on Nov 17, 2015

We had a bar inside the KUKA booth at the China International Industry Fair 2015, but this wasn’t just any bar. In addition to nice hand-made coffee and some finger foods, our bar had KUKA’s LBR iiwa serving up some tasty German beer for our booth attendees. Not only did this show off LBR iiwa’s very serious ability to work safely next to humans and accomplish interesting tasks, it led to some fun reactions from attendees and beer drinkers alike. Find out what they was on their minds in this candid video from the show floor.
