New Year Reception 2010 - 11 January 2010

Professor Sir Michael Brady FREng FRS delivers a lecture on 'The commercial exploitation of scientific research'.

He says that, "Science has many diverse aims, not least the elucidation of basic
principles and novel methods. Most scientific research, particularlyin universities, has as its final product a paper or monograph. Engineering science has the extra dimension of seeking to be applied, and this is a dimension I have continually sought to develop. The specific case of medical image analysis necessitates a fruitful relationship between engineers, clinicians, and industry in order that developments can progress from the whiteboard to the clinic and to economic success. I describe a number of such ventures in which I have been involved, stressing the need for the formulation and exploitation of fundamental physics, engineering, and biology models to ensure software systems that work 99.9% of the time 24/7."

Professor Sir Michael Brady FREng FRS FMedSci FIET FInstP FBCS is BP Professor of Information Engineering at the University of Oxford. Professor Brady's degrees are in mathematics (BSc and MSc from Manchester University, and PhD from the Australian National University). He was appointed Senior Research Scientist of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1980, and helped found its world-famous robotics laboratory. In 1985, he left MIT to take up a newly created Professorship in Information
Engineering.

Professor Brady is the author of over 550 articles and 24 patents in computer vision, robotics, medical image analysis, and artificial intelligence, and the author or editor of ten books, including: Robot Motion (MIT Press 1984), Robotics Science (MIT Press 1989), Robotics Research (MIT Press 1984), Mammographic Image Analysis (Kluwer, January 1999) and Images and Artefacts of the Ancient World (British Academy, 2005) and the International Workshop on Digital Mammography (Springer 2006).

He was Editor of the Artificial Intelligence Journal (1987-2002), and founding Editor of the International Journal of Robotics Research (1981-2000). Professor Brady was the first Director of the EPSRC/MRC interdisciplinary research consortium on "From Medical Images and Signals to Clinical Information" and is a PI on the CRUK/EPSRC/MRC Oxford Cancer Imaging Centre. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy in 1991 and Fellow of the Royal Society in 1997. He is also a FIET, FInstP, FBCS, and FAAAI. Recently, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Science. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by the universities of Essex, Manchester, Liverpool,
Southampton, Oxford Brookes, and Paul Sabatier (Toulouse). He was awarded the IEE Faraday Medal for 2000 and the IEEE Third Millennium Medal for the UK. He was awarded the Henry Dale Prize (for "outstanding work on a biological topic by means of an original multidisciplinary approach") by the Royal Institution in 2005. Professor Brady was knighted in the New Year's honours list for 2003.
