Watch MIT's modular mini cheetah robot land a backflip

Published on Mar 26, 2019

Our new captioned movie shows MIT's "virtually indestructible" mini cheetah robot performing a host of athletic manoeuvres, including stretching, running and jumping.

The nimble quadruped can navigate uneven terrains at up to 5 mph and can recover from nudges, kicks and falls with a swing of its legs.

Unlike its larger, more expensive predecessor the Cheetah 3, the mini cheetah weighs just 20 pounds and was designed with modularity in mind. Each leg consists of three low-cost readily-available motors that can be added and taken away "like lego".

MIT Mini-Cheetahs looking for a new home

Dec 6, 2020

MIT Mini-Cheetahs are looking for a new home. Our new cheetah cubs, born at NAVER LABS, are for the MIT Mini-Cheetah workshop. MIT professor Sangbae Kim and his research team are supporting joint research by distributing Mini-Cheetahs to researchers all around the world.

MIT's Mini Cheetah robot runs faster than ever

Mar 17, 2022

A new method allows MIT's Mini Cheetah to learn how to run fast and adapt to walking on challenging terrain. This learning-based method outperforms previous human-designed methods and allowed the Mini Cheetah to set a record for speed.

The work was supported by DARPA Machine Common Sense Program, Naver Labs, MIT Biomimetic Robotics Lab, and the NSF AI Institute of AI and Fundamental Interactions. The research was conducted at the Improbable AI Lab.

MIT's Mini Cheetah just got faster

Aug 28, 2022

Researchers from MIT have increased the running speed of their Mini Cheetah quadruped robot using a machine-learning technique reminiscent of Neo in The Matrix.
