Nadia - a next generation humanoid robot

Oct 5, 2022

Designed and built by IHMC and Boardwalk Robotics, Nadia is our next generation humanoid robot. Meant for exploring environments built by humans for humans, Nadia has an extreme range of motion, high speed, and significant power. Leveraging our experience working with Atlas, Valkyrie, and countless other robots, Nadia will enable us to continue to advance the state of the art in robotics and move these platforms from the lab into the real-world.

Nadia has been made possible through support from the Office of Naval Research, Army Research Laboratory, and NASA Johnson Space Center.

Nadia strikes a punch-out!!

When testing the speed and power of our new robot arms, what better way than boxing using virtual reality control?

This work was done with new hardware from Boardwalk Robotics.

Nadia's new arm highlights

Feb 8, 2024

Highlights from testing our new arms built by Boardwalk Robotics. Installed in October of 2023, these new arms are not just for boxing, and are provide much greater speed and power. This matches the mobility and manipulation goals we have for Nadia!

Autonomous door traversal behaviors

Nov 6, 2024

Equipped with a new behavior architecture, Nadia navigates and traverses many types of doors autonomously. Nadia also demonstrates robustness to failed grasps and door opening attempts by automatically retrying and continuing. We present the robot with pull and push doors, four types of opening mechanisms, and even spring-loaded door closers. A deep neural network and door plane estimator allow Nadia to identify and track the doors. The corresponding research paper is available as a preprint on ArXiv: https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.03532
