His virtual-reality headset started in his home workshop as a solitary four-year labor of love. Once unveiled, it became the world's most eagerly awaited piece of video-game technology. Already in the hands of developers, the Oculus Rift promises to transform not just our weekend bouts of Doom and other games but also architecture, medicine, brain studies, education, space exploration, and warfare.
