Jared Isaacman, the 39-year-old billionaire who led the Inspiration4 crew last year, has once again teamed up with Elon Musk. Isaacman says he will help pay for three more flights to push further into space, planning to fly closer to the moon than any spaceship since Apollo. NBC’s Tom Costello reports for TODAY.
A SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle launched the Polaris Dawn mission to low-Earth orbit from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, on 10 September 2024, at 09:23 UTC (05:23 EDT). Following stage separation, Falcon 9’s first stage landed on the “A Shortfall of Gravitas” droneship, stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. Falcon 9’s first stage (B1083) previously supported Crew-8 and two Starlink missions. At approximately 700 kilometres above the Earth, the Polaris Dawn crew (Jared Isaacman, Scott Poteet, Sarah Gillis, Anna Menon) will attempt the first-ever commercial extravehicular activity (EVA). Crew Dragon Resilience previously supported the Crew-1 and Inspiration4 missions.
During the Polaris Dawn mission, the Crew Dragon Resilience crewed spacecraft reached an apogee of 1,400.7 km, the highest Dragon mission flown to date, on 11 September 2024. the Polaris Dawn crew (Jared Isaacman, Scott Poteet, Sarah Gillis, Anna Menon) will attempt the first-ever commercial extravehicular activity (EVA).
The Polaris Dawn mission began an extravehicular activity (EVA, “spacewalk”) on 12 September 2024, at 10:12 UTC (06:12 EDT). Mission Commander Jared Isaacman (EV1) exited the Crew Dragon Resilience crewed spacecraft traveling in an elliptical orbit of ~190 x 700 km around the Earth. This is the first-ever commercial extravehicular activity (EVA).
The Polaris Dawn mission completed an extravehicular activity (EVA, “spacewalk”) on 12 September 2024, at 11:57 UTC (07:57 EDT). During the EVA, Mission Commander Jared Isaacman (EV1) and Mission Specialist Sarah Gillis (EV2) exited the Crew Dragon Resilience crewed spacecraft traveling in an elliptical orbit of ~190 x 700 km around the Earth. This was the first-ever commercial extravehicular activity (EVA).
The Polaris Dawn mission’s Crew Dragon “Resilience” spacecraft splashed down off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, on 15 September 2024, at 07:37 UTC (03:37 EDT).
