Underwater Robot Sheds New Light on Antarctic Sea Ice
Published on Nov 24, 2014
The first detailed, high-resolution 3-D maps of Antarctic sea ice have been developed using an underwater robot. Scientists from the UK, USA and Australia say the new technology provides accurate ice thickness measurements from areas that were previously too difficult to access.

Scientists successfully test an unmanned underwater vehicle beneath Antarctic sea ice. The AUV produced high-resolution 3-D maps of previously inaccessible sea-ice floes.
Antarctic sea ice might be three times as thick as we thought, according to data that may help narrow down one of the biggest uncertainties in the global climate system
