On April 18, 2017, Facebook announced the beta launch of Facebook Spaces at Facebook's annual F8 developer conference in San Francisco. Facebook Spaces, a virtual reality app version of Facebook for the Facebook-owned Oculus VR goggles. In a virtual and shared space, users can access a curated selection of 360-degree photos and videos using their avatar. Users can also access their own photos and videos, and any media shared on their Facebook newsfeed. The beta app is currently available in the Oculus Store.

This app is no longer available.

On October 25, 2019, Facebook Spaces was shut down to make way for Facebook Horizon.

We are grateful to each and every one of you who joined us in the experience and have followed us on this journey - and we look forward to having you join us in Facebook Horizon in 2020.

Facebook today revealed on stage during F8 an early prototype of a social VR space, presented by Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer and Social VR team leader Michael Booth.

Facebook has released a whole new world called 'Facebook Spaces' that allows you to 'hang out' with your friends in virtual reality. It is a little hard to explain but Facebook put out a demo video that gives a pretty good sense of how it works.

Facebook launched their first social VR app Spaces last month to much acclaim. It's a polished experience that does a few things very well, and has the major benefit of tapping into Facebook's existing dominance of the social graph. But to become truly compelling it needs to do much more than it does today. Facebook knows this, and is looking to third-party developers to expand and enhance Spaces.
